If a ceiling stain bulges with trapped water, and it is safe to do so, place a bucket below it and make a small hole to let the water drain. Stay clear if the ceiling seems unstable. Turn off power to wet fixtures at the breaker only if you can reach it safely. Keep your hands away from wet switches and wires.

What a proper tarp job does
The tarp needs to cover the opening with room beyond it. On a pitched roof, taking it past the ridge helps keep water from running under the upper edge. Battens screwed down along the secure edges hold the tarp in place. Nails punched through the open field of the tarp create new holes where water can enter.
The roof shape and the location of the opening determine how it can be secured. We assess those details before placing material. A tarp is temporary protection. Once the area is dry enough to inspect, the damaged roofing, flashing, or underlayment still needs a repair plan.
