From the yard, look for a tab that sits higher than its neighbors, a crease across a tab, or a gap along a ridge cap. You may see sand-like granules in the gutter or a dark patch where the shingle surface has worn thin. Keep your feet on the ground; a photograph from below is enough to start the conversation.
Florida sun can dry and age the asphalt surface. Wind can lift a tab and leave a crease where it bent. We check the surrounding shingles as well as the visible spot, because a patch only helps when the nearby material can hold it.

One missing or lifted tab in an otherwise sound area may be a focused repair. Repeated bare patches across multiple slopes, many creased tabs, or brittle shingles that crack when lifted point toward a wider conversation. We show you the affected areas in photos so you can compare the options.
Look at the pattern from the yard: is the problem confined to one roof edge, or does it show up across the whole plane? Note any interior stain too. The stain may sit downhill from the actual opening, so we trace it back before naming the work.

Exposed nails and nail pops give water a direct path through the top layer.

The metal edge directs water into the gutter and protects the roof edge.

This layer sits below the shingles. A surface patch cannot fix damaged material beneath it.

Step flashing protects each course where the roof meets a wall.
Architectural shingles have a layered profile that adds depth to the roof. Three-tab shingles have a flatter, repeating pattern. The difference matters when a few pieces need to match the existing roof. Color, profile, and the condition of the surrounding tabs all shape whether a localized repair will look and perform as expected.
Algae streaks are a separate visual issue. A dark stripe alone does not tell you whether the shingle can still shed water. Granule loss, exposed asphalt, lifted edges, and openings at penetrations give a clearer picture of what needs attention.

Often the first step is to check whether the tabs are still sound and whether the surrounding shingles can be lifted without breaking. We look for the entry point and explain the repair option before recommending broader work.
Dark algae streaks alone do not show whether water is getting through. A close look at the shingles, flashing, and underlayment tells you more than color does.
Look for loose, sand-like granules in the gutters and bald patches visible from the yard. A few loose granules and widespread exposed asphalt are different findings.

Yes. Drip edge, underlayment, ridge caps, and roof-to-wall flashing all matter when water is finding a way in.
